Colloquium - Bernard Linsky - The Bertrand Russell Archives: The corrected proofs of Principia Mathematica - co-hosted with McMaster Library and the Department of Philosophy
Location: Great Hall, University Club
Title: The Bertrand Russell Archives: The corrected proofs of Principia Mathematica
Speaker: A talk by Dr. Bernard Linsky (University of Alberta), hosted by McMaster University Library, for the Departments of Mathematics & Statistics and Philosophy
Abstract: McMaster University has recently acquired two volumes of corrected proofs of the first edition of Principia Mathematica. To celebrate this event, Bernie will talk about the proofs, how they came to Hamilton, and what we can learn from the few corrections that are marked. He will also say a word about the significance of this work in the history of logic and mathematics, and tell a story related to the naming of the reception area in Russell House. There will also be a chance to fold a sheet of paper of super-royal size to learn what was involved in correcting proofs long before \LaTeX.
Principia Mathematica will be on-site for viewing!
Coffee and Cookies will be served in the lounge (Hamilton Hall 216) at 3:00 pm. Everyone is welcome.
Wine and cheese reception to follow. Please RSVP to Rebecca at firstname.lastname@example.org
