TITLE:
On Hille's Theorem and Statistical Applications
ABSTRACT:
Hille (1948) presented a generalized Taylor formula for bounded and continuous functions, whose detailed account is presented in Feller (1965). It has been adapted by Chaubey and Sen (1996) for finding smooth estimation of survival function and further incorporated into estimating other functionals( see Chaubey and Sen, 1999, 2000, 2001). In this talk, we present a generalization of this formula which leads to various smooth estimators of density and distribution functions. It is also shown that this theorem may be used for multivariate smooth density estimation and isotonic estimation of other related functions, such as hazard rate, mean residual life etc. Along with the computational aspects, the asymptotic properties of the estimators are discussed.

About the Speaker
Dr. Y. P. Chaubey is a professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Concordia University in Montreal. His research interest are in the areas of survival analysis, especially smooth estimation of the survival curve, linear models, sampling methods and resampling. Dr. Chaubey received his B.Sc. from Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi, India followed by a M. Stat. from the Indian Statistical Institute in Calcutta. He then received an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Rochester. After graduation Dr. Chaubey spent two years as an assistant professor at Dalhousie University in Halifax before moving to Concordia. In 1985 he took a sabatical position as a visiting scientist in the Department of Theoretical Statistics at the Indian Statistical Institute in Calcutta.
