Graduate Student Involvement in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics

The Mathematics and Statistics department at McMaster University is a mid-sized department with nearly 40 regular faculty and about 70 graduate students.  The very favorable student-to-faculty ratio provides for more personal contact between graduate students and faculty and allows students a wide latitude in choosing their own direction of study.

Graduate students participate in all departmental activities, including a wide range of seminars and working groups.  Research seminars in Algebra, Analysis, Applied & Industrial Math, Financial Math, Geometry & Topology, Logic, Mathematical Biology, and Statistics meet regularly. In addition, the weekly colloquium features talks by prominent mathematicians invited from around the world.  Each year the department hosts the Britton Lectures (endowed by a gift of Ronald and Helen Britton), which are a series of mathematical talks delivered by a prestigious guest lecturer, and the Evelyn Nelson Memorial Lecture, an invited lecture on the foundations of mathematics that commemorates our late colleague.

The department supports a large number (currently 20) of highly talented post-doctoral fellows who engage in active research projects, help organize the weekly seminars, and assist the faculty in offering a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate courses. As individuals who have recently gone through the experience of graduate school themselves, the post-doctoral fellows are in a unique position to offer advice and help to graduate students.
