• For those students using the 2d edition of the textbook, note that the list of practice problems given has been changed to better corresponds with the practice problem list from the 3rd edition. This last list is the one used for the tutorials.

• Text:"Advanced Engineering Mathematics", (3rd edition), by Dennis G. Zill and Michael R. Cullen, Jones & Bartlett Publishers, 2005.

• Course Objective: To explore in detail various techniques to solve differential and partial differential equations and to explore applications to physical and engineering problems.

• Topics: Ordinary differential equations, Laplace transform, power series solutions, Fourier series with engineering applications. This corresponds to the sections in Chapters 1-5 and 12-13 in the text (with possible omission of some sections).

• Tests: There will be two 1 hour tests. The time and date are as follows:
  • Test 1: Tuesday, October 16 from 6:45 pm to 7:45 pm
  • Test 2: Tuesday, November 13 from 6:45 pm to 7:45 pm
  The location of the tests will be announced in class and posted on this Web page prior to each test. Students MUST present their photo ID card at each test.

• Missing a test or an assignment: If you miss a test due date due to illness or other emergency, you must submit a medical certificate from Student Health Services or a doctor to the Office of the Associate Dean (Studies) of your faculty. Unexcused absense from a test will result in a mark of zero for that test. In the event of an excused absence, your course grade will be re-weighted to compensate for the missed tests or assignments.
• Final Exam: A common three-hour final exam will be given in both sections of the course, covering the material which was presented in both lecture sections. As usual, the date and location of the final exam will be announced by the registrar's office in mid-term. Click here for more information on the final exam.

• Evaluation:
  • Tests: 40% (20% each)
  • Final Exam: 60%

• Calculators: You may only use the McMaster standard calculator, the Casio fx991, in tests and on the final exam.

• Tutorials: While tutorial attendance is not mandatory, it is a helpful place to review the homework problems and ask questions.

• Ethics: Academic dishonesty consists of misrepresentation by deception or by other fraudulent means and can result in serious consequences, e.g. the grade of zero on an assignmnent, loss of credit with a notation on the transcript (notation reads:" Grade of F assigned for academic dishonesty"), and/or suspension or expulsion from the university.
