Problem with 2-Sided Printing on HH-403 Printer
Duplex printing is not working on the recently-repaired laser printer in HH-403. I'm not yet sure what the problem is - but it's the printer, not your computer or anything you are or aren't doing. I'll be spending some time trying to isolate the problem (hardware? firmware? configuration?) next week.
Freehand Equations to LaTeX
Web Equation is fairly awesome: you write/draw equations with your trackpad or mouse and it renders the equation in LaTeX and MathML for copy-paste use in articles or web pages.
Here's an example:
New Printer Cabinet for HH-303
The HH-303 printer cabinet gave up the ghost last month - it was from Ikea and was sharp and cheap and lasted eight years, which isn't so bad.The new cabinet is similarly from Ikea and sharp and cheap - but also shorter, which will make scanning easier.
The cupboard on the right (under the printer) will be used for storing reams of paper. The drawers on the left will be for printouts left from previous weeks and scrap paper (i.e. blank or blankish pages which you may leave for general use).
The rack on the wall (to the left of the printer) will now be just for the current week's printouts.
Limited Power Failure Friday Morning
We lost power in parts of Hamilton Hall for two minutes at about 8:00 am. The server room was not affected. Most affected workstations will have come back up on their own; workstations on desktop UPS units will have stayed up.
A decent little desktop battery-backup unit can be had for about $40 these days and will let your computer sail unaffected through most power interruptions. Let me know if you're interested in buying one.

New MacSecure Wireless Certificate
UTS will be changing the security certificate for MacSecure (and Eduroam) wireless on Thursday, February 2nd. The first time you use MacSecure after Thursday you'll need to accept the new certificate.

Fake "Webmail Alert" Message
Many math.mcmaster.ca accounts received a message with a subject similar to "McMaster Math & Stats Webmail Alert" claiming to be from the "Computer Systems & Network Administrator". The message claims that your account has been compromised by spammers and that you should reply with your username and password.
This message is not from me or anyone in RHPCS. It is a phishing attempt and is designed to get your password so that your account can be compromised by spammers. You may ignore it and delete it (or better, save it to the folder rhpcs-mail-cleaner/Spam-missed so that our spam filter can be trained with it).
As ever, there are some tell-tale signs which make it clear that this is spam/phishing and not from me or anyone in RHPCS
- The message was from the anonymous "Computer Systems & Network Administrator"; messages from RHPCS will always be signed by the name of an individual RHPCS staff member.
- We will never ask you to email your password to us.
- If we suspect that your account is compromised by spammers, we will not ask for your password; we will turn your account access off immediately.
