Want a Wiki?

We now have a wiki server. If you'd like a mediawiki (i.e. wikipedia) wiki for your research group or project, just email me.

Your Linux Workstation

A few notes about your linux workstations ...

  • you don't need to turn them off at night; in fact, they need to be on for backups and system updates
  • take a minute and have a quick look at the linux and printing FAQs - that minute might make your life much easier
  • by default, you get the KDE desktop environment when you login, but there are others available under the "Session Type" menu: I prefer the cleaner feel of Gnome; some people like the fast load time of WindowMaker

  • Using your Laptops in Hamilton Hall

A few notes for laptop users ...

  • you can print to the shared printers from your laptop
  • you can access your linux home directory from your laptop (and from home if you first make a VPN connection)
  • don't use the network cable from your workstation to connect your laptop to the network; just ask me and I will make sure that you get an additional network connection

  • Some Printing Reminders

A few notes / reminders (depending on how long you've been with the department) about printing ...

  • there is a web page with general information about printing
  • the HH-303 printer will scan multi-page documents and email a PDF file to you
  • you can print from your laptop; the setup is a little bit complicated, but there are detailed instructions
  • Macintosh users can take advantage of the booklet option when printing to the HH-303 printer
  • the AIMS (HH-403) and PhiMac (HH-402) printers are for use by people in those groups only (unless the HH-303 printer is down)
  • printing multiple copies of documents is bad for multiple reasons: cost, hogging the printer, and the fact that you get n^2 copies if you request n
  • when you print from acroread in linux, make sure to use kprinter -c

Maple 10 Now Default on Bluespruce, Bayes

Maple 9 has been removed from bluespruce and bayes; the commands maple and xmaple will now invoke Maple 10. Due to new university licensing policy, the department won't be able to upgrade from Maple 9 on the desktop linux workstations.

A Few Notes for New Grad Students and PDFs

    1. See the "I'm new" page for a quick summary of the computers, software, printers, email and web services available to you.
    2. Spam filtering is enabled for all new accounts.
    3. You should not turn off your linux workstation when you leave; it needs to be on for overnight updates and backups.
