Mathserv Reboot

Update: mathserv is back up ca. four minutes' downtime due to the planned reboot on Saturday the 17th.

Mathserv will be rebooted at ca. 6:30 pm Saturday the 17th in order to sort out a network problem; it should be down for no more than ten minutes.

msprime systems will freeze up while mathserv is down but will pick up just where they left off when it's back on. If you are using your workstation at 6:30 pm, just wait until control comes back - there's no point to rebooting.

"Bounced Mail" Warning from the "Support Team"

Please ignore any email warning you that your account has been compromised and asking y ou to run an attached program; it's a ruse to get you to run an attachment which may very well compromise your Windows computer.

Mail from RHPCS will always be identified as coming from me or from one of the other sysadmins personally and we would never ask you to run anything from an attachment.

OpenOffice.org Shortcuts Fixed

It was pointed out to me today that for most people, click OpenOffice Calc, Math or Draw always brought up OpenOffice Write (the word processor); the same was true of the command-line shortcuts oocalc, oomath and oodraw. The icons and commands should now bring up the correct application.

Notes About Printing

Two problems have come to light since Thursday's announcement regarding the new printing instructions:
  1. I didn't have the smb queue names for all printers posted; that has been corrected.
  2. The instructions for OS X include a reference to username:password; make sure that you replace the text username with your username and password with your password.

Reminder: Printing Charges

As announced in the Summer of 2006, the department is now charging 5 cents per page for printing: the first 100pp/yr are free for faculty and staff; the first 1000pp/yr are free for graduate students.

There is no free printing for visitors; hosts will be charged for all pages printed.

See the Printing Guidelines for more information.

Booklet Printing on the HPLJ 4345 from OS X

The OS X driver for the HPLH 4345mfp has a Booklet option under the Finishing menu: this allows you to print four pages per sheet (two per side) such that you can just fold the pages in half and have a little booklet.

Windows and OSX Printing via SMB - and Only SMB

The current mechanism for printing from Windows and OS X laptops and desktops will be unavailable as of March 1st. From that point on, only SMB (i.e. Windows networking) printing pointing to queues on mathserv will be available.

The good news is that since the SMB printing requires a departmental username and password, we can now print from the public MacConnect wireless connections.

The HPLJ 4345 is back on-line; all queues diverted to HH-403 are now going to HH-303 again.

HH-303 Printers/Scanner Down

The HH-303 HPLJ 4345 printer/scanner is down with a software error. We're now waiting on a technician. It will probably be down until Monday.

Jobs sent to the queues for this pinter (incl. lp3 and lj3) have been redirected to the HHH-403 printer. I'm told that HH-403 is usually open for much of Saturday and Sunday.
