Yay Us - We're Worm Free
UTS reports that McMaster got hit by a worm earlier this week. Math & Stats is clean, I'm pleased to report.
There were several dozen computers infected; none of these systems are in Math & Stats. On the one hand, we're less of a target because of all of the unix boxes and Macs in the department. But our Windows systems are apparently up to date, because UTS reports that there are 136 machines which they can detect as vulnerable, and none of them are ours. That said, it's very, very important for Windows users - including laptop users - especially laptop users - to be diligent in keeping up with Windows Update and anti-virus software patches. One infected machine can very quickly spread a worm through an entire department subnet.
