Minor Server Crash
Mathserv was down for about twenty-five minutes this afternoon after a system failure at 2:50. No files or mail appear to have been lost, and the server was up again by 3:15.
This was not at all like the most of the failures that plagued us between January and May. In those cases, we had RAID file-system crashes from which recovery took up to twelve hours. In this case, I once I was aware that the server was inaccessible and had convinced myself that the server was not happily running behind a failed network link, a simple reboot brought it back up immediately. Most workstations simply picked up where they left off. The logs show no obvious reason for the failure; I will review them more thoroughly next week.
