2 December 2008 All marks are now posted on WebAssign. From the Math 1X homepage, go to Grades/My Scores Summary. Click on Exams(2) and assignment(9) to check that the correct marks are recorded.  Let me know by Friday, Dec 5 at the latest if there are any mistakes.

2 December 2008 Final Exam Information The final exam is on Wednesday, December 17, 12:30-3:30. Information about rooms can be found on the registrar's website: http://registrar.mcmaster.ca/scheduling/examfinalb.php# .

The final exam will have 6-10 problems; you must do all of them. There will be a formula sheet; a copy is posted here so that you know what to expect. DO NOT BRING THIS FORMULA SHEET INTO THE EXAM ROOM.
A practice final is posted here. The practice final is given only as something for you to work on; you should not expect the real final to be identical in terms of number of problems or ordering of topics.
The final exam will cover all of the material of the course. The lists of topics for each midterm is a good guide for what to study for the final exam (as well as chapter 7, of course).  Here is a partial list of topics that you do not need to know:
-the definition of e; the change of base theorem for logs
-the squeeze theorem for limits
-arccosec, arcsec, arccot as functions; derivatives of inverse trig functions (the most important ones are in the antiderivatives tables)
-logarithmic differentiation
-hyperbolic functions
-the mean value theorem
-partial fractions with repeated irreducible quadratic factors

In Question 5 of the practice midterm, the derivatives of the function are given incorrectly. They should be:
f'(x) = (-1/x^2)(1 + 2/x) and f''(x)= (1/x^3)(3 + 8/x). Thanks to Michelle and Adam for finding the mistake.

4 September 2008 There seems to be some confusion about the textbook. The required text is Stewart's "Calculus: Early Transcendentals" 6th edition, and access to WebAssign. If you buy the package new from Titles Bookstore, the cost is $181.75. Note that the package includes solution manuals for the entire book, and access to WebAssign for two semesters, so you should think of this as the cost of books for two semesters. If you do not buy the package, you will have to buy access to WebAssign online, and this costs $25 for each semester. If you do not have the 6th edition, you are responsible for knowing any discrepancies between the books.
