13 December 2010: Updated marks, including assignment 3 and all
corrections to marks for MIdterms 1 and 2 are available here.
Inform Dr Haskell by email at the latest by Thursday 16 December 10am
of any problems.
9 December 2010: There will be a formula sheet for the exam; it is
included in the practice exam. You will not be required to state or
prove theorems. See the practice exam to get an idea of the kind of
problems you should expect to see.

6 December 2010: A practice final exam is available here.
This will be discussed during the review session on Dec 13.
29 November 2010: Two events for your calendar. The Science Society is
hosting an "Exam Survival" evening on Dec 1, 19:00-20:30 in MDCL1305.
Professors in first year courses will be giving tips on how to succeed
in exams. There will be a review session for Math 1A on Monday, Dec 13,
16:30-18:30 in CNH 104. The Math 1A final exam is on Dec 16,
19:30-22:30. Check your personal exam timetable on line, as some exams
scheduled in IWC have been relocated to DBAC.
29 November 2010: There seems to be some ambiguity in Q4 of the Week 11
Homework assignment. There are two different regions which satsify the
description of the area that you need to calculate. To fix the choice,
take "the region enclosed by the curves y = cos x, y = cos(x - c), and
x = 0" to be the region to the right of the line x=0. Take "the region
enclosed by the curves y = cos(x - c), x = π, and y = 0" t be the
region to the left of the line x=\pi.
23 November 2010: Jizhan will be holding his office hours (in the Math
Help Centre) on Thursday 6:30-8:30 pm this week.
23 November 2010: As announced in class, your final grade will be
calculated as the better of the mark given by the original distribution
and the mark you get with the final counting for 85% of the total. So
if you have not done as well on the midterms as you would like, don't
give up hope! But you do need to work out what went wrong on the
midterms so that you can do better on the final.

15 November 2010: Correction to the correction below. This morning, I
see nothing worng with the file.
14 November 2010: Correction: I think I confused the two columns for
the midterm marks. The column labelled Midterm1 has the Midterm 2 marks
and vice versa. I will post a corrected version on Monday.
14 November 2010: Marks for Midterm 2 and Assignment 2 are
posted here. Remember that you can collect your midterm and assignment
from the Math Help Centre. The marks are sorted by the last five digits
of your student ID number. Columns 2 and 3 have the assignment marks
out of 8 and 10 respectively; Colums 4 and 5 have the two midterm

Midterm 2. Monday 8 November

midterm 2. You should not assume that the actual midterm will have
the same number or arrangement of problems, nor that it covers exactly
the same material. This practice exam is intended only to give you an
idea of what the midterm will look like.
1 November 2010: Here is a list
of formulas that you should know for the upcoming midterm. The midterm
is Thursday 11 November, 7:00-8:30 pm. If you have a scheduled class
which meets at that time, send an email to your instructor with your
name,
student id number and the number of the conflicting course. We must
receive this email by 5pm on Tuesday, 9 October. You will be able to
take the test on Thursday at 5-6:30 pm; you will be informed of the
room by email. If you have some other reason
to wish to reschedule, you must speak with your instructor personally
(and do not be too optimistic).
Your test room is assigned based on the alphabetical
listing of your last (family) name. ATTENTION: this is different from
the room assignments for the last test!

The midterm will cover sections 7.1,
7.2, 7.3, 7.4, 7.5, 7.7, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3 of the textbook.
25 October 2010: Starting this week, the weekly homework on WebAssign
will be due on Wednesdays, rather than Tuesdays. This change is because
sections 2 and 3 will finish the material for that week on the Monday,
and need time to work on the assignment.

19 October 2010: Corrected marks up until Monday, 18 October are posted

(X indicates an excused absence has been received from the dean's
office.) All requests to review the marking on Midterm 1 and Assignment
1 must be recevied by Friday, 22 October. Requests after that date will
be denied.

the fundamental theorem of calculus, parts 1 and 2
the limit definition of the derivative
precise statements of rules for differentiating
the Riemann sum definition of the definite integral

27 September 2010: Homework to be handed in at the end of this week (or
beginning of next). Come to tutorial prepared by looking at the
problems ahead of time. Jizhan will discuss what a complete solution
should look like. Finish the problems right after tutorial, and hand in
your solutions to the assignments lockers on the gorund floor of
Hamilton Hall. Homework is due on the day of the tutorial that you
attend.
27 September 2010: All students should now have a textbook and
WebAssign registration. The last day for receiving an extension on the
Diagnostic and Homework 1 is Tuesday 28 September. Contact your
instructor immediately if you still have a problem with your
registration.
24 September 2010: Jizhan's office hours in the Math Help Centre are
Tuesdays 6:30--8:30 in the evening.
19 September 2010: Apparently, the bookstore is again, or still, out of
textbooks. If you have not been able to get registered on WebAssign by
the due dates, contact your instructor to get an extension on the
Diagnostic and Homework 1.
13 September 2010: Rumour has it that the bookstore has run out of
textbooks. The due date of the diagnostic is therefore moved to
midnight on Sunday, 19 September, so that hopefully you have the chance
to buy your books and register for WebAssign.
9 September 2010: The class keys listed in the course outline were
incorrect. Here are the correct class keys:

My apologies for the mistake.
9 September 2010: The dates for the midterms as given in the course
outline are correct, however the DAYS are stated incorrectly. Both
midterms are on THURSDAYs, 7 October and 11 November.
8 September 2010: Welcome to Math 1A03 Fall 2010. A powerpoint
presentation explaining how to register on WebAssign is available here
(courtesy of the publisher). Take the Diagnostic this weekend, and use
it to decide what material to review from your Grade 12 notes or the
first three chapters of Stewart.
6 August 2010: Classes begin on 9 September 2010. Enjoy the rest of the
