April 10 2013: Solutins to the practice exam. Odd-numbered pages. Even-numbered pages.

April 9 2013: Dr Valeriote will hold office hours in HH 323 on Thursday April 18 1:00--3:30 and Monday April 22 2:00--4:00.

April 9 2013: Nigel will have office hours on Wednesday April 17 10:30--12:30 in C-105. Emily will have office hours on Monday April 22 10:30--12:30 in C-105. Dr Valeriote's office hours wil be posted shortly. The final exam is Monday April 22, 19:00-22:00.

April 8 2013: Complete marks for the year, sorted by last 4 digits of student id. Please let me or Dr Valeriote know of any problems.

April 8 2013: Change! The review session will be on Saturday April 20, 1:00 -- 3:00 in HH 302.

April 2 2013: Review session for the final exam will be on Friday April 19,  1:00--3:00 in HH 109. Please send questions for Irena and Rebecca to present ahead of time, either by email or by posting on the Facebook page. 
The final exam is on Monday April 22, 7--10 pm.

March 21 2013: New quiz policy. When calculating your final mark for the course, the lowest quiz score will be dropped. If, for any reason, you did not take one of the quizzes, that is the  score that will be dropped.

March 8 2013: Solutions to the midterm are posted on the calendar below. Complete marks for this semester up to the midterm are posted here, sorted by last 5 digits of student number. X indicates an excused absence. Please check these over and let me know of any errors.

March 4 2013: emergency update --- the topic of solving linear ODEs using an integrating factor is included on the midterm! Sorry for the late notice.

February 28 2013: Nigel's Monday office hour will be in BSB B103 on March 4. Science faculty information session What to do in Level II? .

February 28 2013: The midterm is scheduled 18:30-20:00. Since the logic class runs until 18:20, I will start the exam instead at 18:45. This will give you a few minutes to get into exam mode. TimBits will be on offer so you can survive until 20:15.

February 28 2013: Integration Marathon tonight! This exciting event will take place in KTH 104, 7 - 9 pm. I'll start by reviewing some strategies for tackling integration problems, and then we'll work through a lot of problems. The TAs will be around to help at least some of the time. Bring lots of paper, a pencil, and a big eraser. Actually, forget the eraser. It's better to cross out (neatly!) because sometimes in the middle of the second attempt, you realise the first attempt contained some useful work.

February 25 2013: Rebecca will hold her office hours in the Math Cafe for the next two weeks.

February 25 2013: Midterm coming up on Tuesday, March 5, 18:30-20:00  in T29 101. It will cover 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.6, 5.7, 5.10, 6.1, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, 7.4, 7.5, 7.6. There will be some short-answer questions, some conceptual questions and some longer problems. In preparation for the midterm, there will be an integration marathon on Thursday, February 28, in the evening. Further details to come.

February 10 2013: I hope everybody enjoyed their snow day. Nigel will hold his tutorial during his office hour on Monday in C-104, and will then hold an office hour for the following hour.

February 4 2013: A useful source for good writing about mathematics is the journal Mathematical Intelligencer http://www.springer.com/mathematics/journal/283. This is published by Springer, so from within McMaster university, you should be able to download any articles. Most of the articles are written by mathematicians for a non-expert audience. As you can see, you don't need to write a lot of equations and calculations -- but you do need some! You will want to explain what the mathematics is, and how it relates to your topic. You do not have to include pictures. Feel free to ask questions!

January 21 2013: As I announced in class today, there will be a resit of Quiz #6 for anyone who is not happy with their mark. Please try to sort out what went wrong the first time, preferably by talking the quiz over with me, and then send me an email to arrange a time. This opportunity will expire by the time of the next quiz, so act fast!

January 1 2013 Welcome to term 2 of Arts and Science 1D06. The first week of classes will be taught by Dr Valeriote, and he will finish off talking about the fundamental theorem of calculus. I will return (from a research conference in Germany) in time for the second week of classes, when we will start techniques of integration.
